Location pictures for final film

In this shot, we see an eye through a black door, this was effective because it is very chilling and haunting to see that someone is watching you, this is why it would be effective to use this in our film as we have a ghostly presence watching someone.

This was one of the favourite shots of mine as there is a hand coming out from this small confined space, this was popular amongst our group as we had idea's of possibly placing our villain/ghost in the film in there.

The shot of these black doors is very eff
ective because there very large and daunting make whoever lives in that place seem very small and vulnerable. Also with the colour of black it gives an old fashioned look which will give the house a creepy haunting effect.

This is a shot looking down from the cellar where the hand came out, from this angle it shows how small the place where the ghost lives which makes the viewer seem very comfortable as they feel as if there also trapped being forced to watch the horror that is going to happen.

This shot is good because it is similar to the shot from the grudge where the child is watching people through the banister bars, we were also thinking about incorporating this into our film as it could be the ghost watching the character.

This shot is also one shot we were thinking about using in our film as it could be a hand of a character being dragged behind the large black doors as it could be her trapped in this horrible place. the use of the drain is also good because it shows it's very old fashioned and dirty possibly representing the date in which this is set.

This shot is effective because this could be the ghost/villain in our film searching for the victim around the house, the use of the figure and red carpet contrasts as it's the colour of danger and death so it's as if it's coming to get the victim.

These are shots from the house that we are filming our film in, this is an effective place to set it because it's quite old fashioned and looks scary.

Evaluation of Preliminary Task

Evaluation Of Preliminary Task

For our preliminary task we created a short film that links to the subject of Horror and thriller. Through this task we used a range of shots, sounds and editing aspects that helped us create the film overall, each member of the group had a role in each part of filming editing and costume etc. There we a lot of aspects that worked well in our film and this helped build to the tension in our scenes, for example the first shot is a canted angle following Flynn walk down a corridor, this creates a sense of unease to the audience and possibly shows that Flynn is the victim in the film. This shot is used for around 6 seconds, this was a good length to have that specific angle because it wasn’t too long to become natural angle but wasn’t too short so that is still created an uneasy feeling.

In the next shot we see an over the shoulder shot of Flynn looking at me through a gap in the door, this was effective because with the walls and door divided us, it creates a barrier between mine and Flynn’s character because through the door is my world where I am in my psychotic world and then Flynn’s on the outside in the real world which soon cross paths as Flynn steps into my world. Then cuts to a low angle shot, this shows my dominance in the world how im a big powerful figure. In the shot you see a bag in the background, this at first seems like it should be there, however in the next shot we see that it isn’t, this was a mistake that we missed out on while we were editing, this was bad continuity on our part, however this helped us because we now know what to look out for when filming our final task.
In the next shot is an extreme close up over the shoulder shot of Vans ear, we did this so that it hides the mystery behind Van of who he is and what his intentions are, also we did it this close because we wanted to sort of hide my face because secretly it’s actually me talking because you see my mouth move a bit under his ear, this confuses the audience because we wonder why he is talking as well.

Then begins a point of view shot where were in the eyes Flynn as he walks into the room, He is looking at me then quickly pans across the see the horror of Van hanging from the ceiling, The shot of the feet is effective because it clearly shows what has happened and brings the horror into the film and starts to make the audience uneasy. The camera then pans quickly back to realise that I have disappeared from my chair. This makes the audience worried for Flynn.

There is then a mid shot of Flynn backing away from the chair because he starts to get worried, the door quickly closes behind him, this was effective because with the door closing it now shows that Flynn is now trapped in this room with the killer and he can no longer escape. Then there is a shot of the door slamming shut from outside of the room, this makes the audience feel helpless because they are no longer their with him to help him escape from me, the camera then goes to a close up of Flynn through a window, this brings the emotion of the character forward that you can see the fear in his face which makes the audience sympathize for him. Then I appear behind him, this is very daunting that the audience know something that Flynn doesn’t however they are powerless to help him, then I lunge at him however you do not see anything happen due to a sudden black out, this leaves mystery for the viewer wandering what happened to him.

The door then opens again slowly leaving the story untold to the viewer about what’s happened and what will happen next.

Analysis Of Psycho

Analysis of Psycho- Representation of Victim/Villain
Credits
As soon as the credits start there is a sudden impact of loud and fast music. This is setting the whole mood for the rest of the film that it’s dark and gives an uneasy feeling throughout the whole film. The only type of editing we see are a lot of bars coming across the screen at different angles, this represents bars, and it’s as if it’s trapping the person in the film because the bars are going over the names of crew and director and when the bars disappear they quickly returned to give off the effect that no matter how hard you try they will always come back and get you. Another effect of the bars is that it’s trapping the viewer and making them watch this film even if they don’t want to they are being forced to. When the names of the crew and directors appear, they start of being misplaced and jagged with a thick line through them, this represents a knife cutting a person open which gives the audience a quick hint to what their going to expect from the film.
Opening Scene/ Introduction to Possible Victim
After the credits, the music calms down when the whole city is shown via establishing shot that pans, this is to represent the calm equilibrium of life and how everything is fine. As the city is shown credits appear saying ‘Phoenix Arizona’ this is setting the scene for our film which gives the viewer background information towards the film, Another credit that appears is’ Friday the eleventh’, this is confusing for the viewer because normally a terrible Friday is Friday the 13th however its not so it gives the effect that its going to be a safe day, another effect is when the viewer thinks of a weekend they think a happy stress free couple of days however this is quickly taken away later on in the film. As the camera pans across the city and establishes the shot, The mise-en-scene gives the effect of a hunter/predator looking for his next kill and this mirrors to later on in the film of Norman and him watching Marion, Then the camera zooms in on an open window, the window closes in at a canted angle, this is disorientating for the viewer because it isn’t considered normal so you know something’s wrong. The camera then goes in through the small gap in the window and it mirrors a predator creeping up on its prey getting ready to attack.
The first shot we see of our characters is a girl lying on a bed half naked with a man standing over her, at first sight it’s as if this man has murdered this girl and it quickly makes the viewer uneasy cause they believe something has already happened, however we then see them both move so the audience’s tension are put at rest. This scene is introducing the possible victim in the story. Then begins the dialogue between the two characters, throughout the whole dialogue the characters are constantly moving around the room and bed, however the camera always keeps them both in a 2 person mid shot, the camera is in a two person mid shot throughout the whole scene, this shows the relationship between both characters and how they are very close, however this changes nearer the end of the scene when they start to disagree with one another because the camera then turns to singular mid shots, this represents how their relationship is slowly parting. Also the two characters are softly touching each other’s bodies and being delicate to one another, this shows the contrast between the killer and the man, the man is being soft and looking after her body where as the killer will damage and be rough with her.
First Appearance of Norman
As Marion is approaching the motel, there is a point of view shot from Marion’s perspective at the ‘Bates Motel’ sign, this shows the sign to be very off centred which is disorientating for the viewer because it’s making them search for the sign instead of it being thrown in their face. Also because the sign is off centred this could link to Norman, how he isn’t a normal person even though he appears normal, another thing that links to Norman is how the sign is blurred by rain, this could represent Norman appearing to be nice at the start however there is something about him as if he is hiding something about himself.
As Marion arrives at the motel, you get the first appearance of Norman from a long shot , at first he seems very excited about having a new person to come to his motel, however there is a slight sense of hesitance to him about approaching her which hints to the viewer that something is not right about him. As he approaches her he starts of friendly and offers to take in her things etc then they both head into their office, throughout the dialogue there is a lot of cross cutting between both characters and from this you can see Norman is considerably bigger than Marion which shows his dominance over her. As Norman goes to select the keys, Marion turns her head  to look at the magazine hanging out of her bag containing the money, the words we see are ‘okay’, this is ironic to the situation to she’s in because it may seem okay but it’s really not. The camera then cuts back to Norman selecting the keys and whilst doing this, he hand hovers of number 3 of the keys then goes down to 2 and 1, this could represent the countdown of Marion being in Normans possession and that she can no longer escape, essentially being the countdown of her life ending. Also throughout the conversation, everything that they hold hints to sharp objects, for example the pen she is using is very sharp, and the way the keys are placed are also very sharp so it links to the knife being used in the murder later on.
Norman then invites Marion to have dinner with him, this is showing that he appears as a nice guy and just being kind to her, so he then takes her into a separate room behind the office, this could represent Marion falling deeper and deeper into Norman’s trap. Whilst eating dinner with Norman in a two person mid shot, From the Mise-en-scene you can see there is a difference in lighting and objects surrounding each character, for example when the camera is on Marion it’s quite bright and there are everyday household objects, but when the camera goes on Norman its very dark and there are Birds of prey surrounding him, this could represents both their personalities and how Norma is the predator stalking and hunting Marion the prey. Also there is a open book behind Norman, this represents him from Marion’s perspective, because she can see him as a nice man at the moment (one page) but there is so much more to him that she doesn’t know (rest of the book). Also their costumes contrast with one another because Marion has her clothes buttoned up which represents her class and formal way of life, but then there is Norman’s top is unbuttoned which isn’t normal back then so it represents his insecurity and shows to the viewer that there is something not right about him.
Norman then proceeds to show Marion to her room, as they enter the room there are more birds of prey paintings surrounding her which gives the effect that the danger is closing in on her and always following her. Norman shows her each part of the room calmly and clearly, but then he shows her the shower, but he does not turn on the light and he is hesitant about it, this shows that this dark room is very dangerous and Norman knows it is because he has possibly murdered someone in there before.
As Norman leaves, he then goes back to his office where he removes a painting off a wall which then reveals a hole looking into Marion’s room, he then begins to watch her get undressed, but the camera quickly puts us in Normans point of view which disturbs the audience because its put them in a sense of voyeurism invading her privacy.
Murder Scene
Then begins the build up to the murder scene, it starts off with Norman going into his house, he starts to go upstairs but then changes his mind to stay downstairs, this could represent his mood and intentions, by him going upstairs he would of left her alone and gone to bed but as he decides to stay down stairs, he keeps his bad intentions in his head and starts to plan out what he is going to do to her.
The camera then cuts back to Marion getting ready to go in the shower, as she is getting ready we see a medium shot of her and we see a mirror behind her, in the mirror, from the Mise-En-Scene  there appears to be outline of a shadow that looks like a bird of prey behind her, this represents that danger is closing in on her and is constantly stalking her. She then flushes some paper down the toilet, this represents her life being washed away and that everything she has worked for to get the money is being taken away. As she enters the shower, she pulls the curtain closed very harshly and aggressively, the digetic sound it creates is very irritating and harsh for the viewer which could link to the murderer being aggressive towards her.  The innocence then develops even more, because at the start we thought she was vulnerable just in her normal life but it’s now grown even more because she is naked in the shower with water coming down on her which takes her attention away from the danger that is approaching because it’s an equilibrium of life and feels normal. From the lighting and facial expressions we can she is very happy and feels safe in the shower because she now feels clean and fresh however this quickly changes.
The close up from inside the shower shows the curtain behind her, we then see a faint movement of the door opening and a mysterious figure standing in the doorway, Marion cannot see this but we can  so it makes us feel powerless to help her. The figure then starts to come closer to Marion which builds the tension dramatically with the music building, Then the figure quickly pulls the curtain open then begins the quick cuts of shots between the knife and Marion which is very irritating because of the harsh music that is going with it which makes the audience feel uneasy about what they are seeing, Marion then falls down to the floor and we see an extreme close up of her eye, we see a tear coming out which contrasts from only five minutes ago where she was happy, also we see a shot of the blood flowing down the drain, this links back to the paper in the toilet but instead of the paper its her blood going down and her life being drained from her.
After the scene, Norman then proceeds to tidy up the room then begins to get rid of the evidence as if nothing happened to act as if no one was there the motel is still waiting on his next victim. He then picks up the newspaper containing the money and throws the newspaper in the newspaper in the boot of the car with Marion’s body, this represents the story of her and how she lived and worked hard for the money thinking it would  make her happy but then ended up having a role which lead up to her death.

Scipt For Final Movie

Girl 1: Are you setting in to the house well?
Girl 2: Yeah I guess, im adjusting to it, Although its weird cause the previous owners wanted to get rid of it really quick, it kinda gave me the creeps, Anyway my parents should be home soon

(Power cuts)
(Both Looks Around)
Girl 1:What’s going on? (concerned)
Girl 2: Oh it’s just the power (Walks to draw to get torch) I’ll just go turn it on (leaves room)
Later on when searching
Girl 1: (walks out of room) (Calls name)

This was supposed to be our script for the final film. We originally filmed our movie with all this involved within, so once we filmed all of it we went to go edit our film, and we realised that this dialogue took up a minute of a film which did not leave us much time to create a story, so instead we cut out all this dialogue and did not use it in our final film.

Animatics

We as a group came up with the ideas then Van Abner Consul drew the storyboard and created the Animatics.

Script For Preliminary Task

(Flynn walking down corridor hears conversation and is attracted)
Me: (shot of me through door)…… Im all alone now, Look at what you’ve done, you are my only friend
(Flynn looks in/close up of me)
He’s going to get what’s coming to him, he didn’t listen to me
Van: (Over the shoulder) teach him a lesson….. Gut him like a fish
Me: (As Flynn walks in) Im a nice guy I never meant to hurt him…… but he’s next
Flynn: (As camera pans): What’s going on?

We used all of this dialogue into our film as it was the best way to get across the story of our piece in such a short time, The dialogue was effective because it didn't give to much away but gave a lot of hints as to what was happening.

Mind Map Of A Thriller Film

This is a mind map of what the conventions of a thriller film are, what's included and needed in this genre.
When incorporating this into our films we used a lot of them as it was best to build tension in the film. With props in our final film, we used a torch for the character to shine around, this was effective because a lot of films incorporate this into as it brings across a lot of fear when having the scene shot in the dark without being able to see much of the surroundings.
With locations we went with an old fashioned large house, this is typically used in most horror/thriller films as they hold a lot of mystery inside them because it's so large the audience don't know what is going to happen.
For characters we used the stereotypical 'damsel in distress' where the innocent girl in white is being chased/haunted by some sort of presence. This was used because we thought it was best way to get the most audience reaction.

Detailed Analysis Of Tenacious D In the Pick Of Destiny

This is the shots from the opening scene which link to the analysis
In the town of Kickapoo, Missouri a young Jack Black known as JB or Jables is punished by his strictly religious father for playing rock music, whilst shut in his room, he asks for guidance from his poster of Ronnie James Dio, who springs to life and tells him to go to Hollywood on a quest to form the worlds most awesome rock back. After years of travelling to every other city named Hollywood in America, a full grown Jables meets a guitar player called Kyle Gass known as KG or Kage who is a street performer in L.A. and begins to look up to him because of his "skills and attitude"

The first shot of the film is a establishing shot which shows the setting of the scene, from the shot the audience can see a equilibrium of a everyday house which would be associated in some sort of neighborhood. Also from them mise-en-scene you can see the walls are clear white to represent this house as pure and natural. There are also credits on the screen to show to the audience where about in the world the film is set.

The next shot shows a cross on the wall, from the mise-en-scene the audience are instantly attracted to this because the camera zooms out from the cross and also the light is directed onto the cross to lighten it up and make it stand out in front of the wall, Also this represents to the audience that this household is religious.

The shot then goes to the dinner table to show the family that live in this household, in the shot you can see the family praying at the table, this shows there religious and also by each character wearing white represents them being pure and innocent along with the house hold which is also white all over.

However there is one seat missing, this makes the audience question the film as to why another family member isn't sitting there, where is he and why isn't he praying with the rest of his family.

Suddenly the shot changes to a room where there is now a brown cross that is upside down, this represents someone who doesn't believe in religion and that there purity has gone which contrasts to the family household, also there are famous rock band posters on the wall which wasn't like the rest of the house so this might be introducing the other member of the family that may be different from the others.

Then enters this character, he is wearing casual clothes including jeans and a black t-shirt,  this shows that this character is different from the rest of his family because there not wearing identical clothes or anything white. Also the character is holding a guitar, wearing a rock band t-shirt, and doing the rock hand gesture and along with the posters in the previous shot this shows that this character loves rock and loves to perform and listen  to it.

The character then goes on to sing a rude, inappropriate song that the parents are appalled by, this shows the nature of this character how he is rebellious from his family and doesn't follow their beliefs,

The father suddenly gets up and starts to take off this belt, these leaves the audience uneasy cause they can expect what’s going to happen, that the father is going to whip this boy because he doesn't do what he is told, this also shows to the audience what type of household this is, that if they don’t abide to their parents rules then they will be extremely punished for there actions.

The father then begins to punish the boy, he has bent him over his lap to represent his authority and higher status over him and begins to whip him, and the child does not like this but has to do it because he has no power over the elder. Also by the room, the mise-en-scene shows you can tell this is the kids life style, he is a fan of the rock genre because his bed covers are black to show his rebellious evil side, it’s messy and there are rock posters everywhere so the audience already pick up information about this child.

The father then begins to shout at the child in a two mid shot for what he has done telling him why was he born if he disobeys his father’s orders and he’s obsession with rock music has made him a ‘mindless puppet’, the child doesn't seem to care about this he seems to be more angry and what’s to do something about it but he can’t due to his lack of power.

His father then begins to rip down his posters and turns the cross the right way round, this shows how his power is over throwing the child’s ambitions and beliefs because his father wants him to live the way he tells him to.

When the father leaves however strangely the child starts to pray, this confuses the audience because they believed he was a rebel and didn't believe in religion, however in the next shot it shows he is praying to a poster that his father didn't pull down which is surrounded by fire and skulls which then puts the audience back to believing the child is a rebel because he is praying to demons.

The poster then becomes animated and starts to sing to the child telling him he must run away from home and disobey his parents, this follows the rock genre because rock is associated with rebellious behavior etc , also when the poster comes alive this adds to the humor of the situation because this would never happen in real life.

The child then starts to run away from home, in the shot you see the child climbing out of his window, this however makes the audience worried because he is only young so they believe he will not be able to cope living on the streets by himself.

The child then starts his travels and instead of following him it just shows a cartoon map of where he is going, this in a way shows the setting of the film and establishes the scene because it showing the different places and by the Hollywood California sign it shows this place is in America.

The audience are then reassured of their worries because it now shows the child fully grown up now but he is still wearing the same type of clothing which signifies that he is in a way still immature and a child because he has had no education because he ran away and he still resorts to casual clothing.

Detailed Analysis of The Horde

This are frames of the opening which link to the analysis

The horde is a French horror film based on a zombie apocalypse in modern day France. The main story line is a posse of crooked cops, malevolent gangsters and a horde of zombies. Penned like animals on the top floor of a deserted high rise block, these two opposing gangs find that they are not alone in the lair of bloodthirsty corridors of death. Joining forces to survive, they must reach ground level together or perish. Loaded with heavy weaponry, bad attitudes, axes and extremely creative hand to hand combat sequences that project the fears and paranoia that are the fighting forces behind the need to survive when caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time situation.

The first shot of few shots of the film are the names of companies that have produced the film, this lets the audience see who created the film and know if the reputation of the company will follow with the film.

The first character we see is someone who appears to be dead, this instantly makes the audience guess, has the apocalypse already started? Has this man been murdered? Is he a zombie as well? This automatically hooks the audience straight from the start due to the mise-en-scene

The next shot we see is a close up of the dead man’s hands, this changed the opinions of the audience straight away and more questions have risen, is this man in prison, was he kidnapped and murdered, why is he tied up, all this is questioned but nothing has been given away by the film which makes this very effective

The next shot instantly wipes away all the questioning about what happened to the man when the camera zooms out to show a man’s arm in front of the man, this shows that this unknown man did this to the dead body, you do not see the identity of the man except for his tattoo, this might lead on to something in a later date so this gives the audience something to remember as the story progresses.

However the shot cuts instantly changes to a grave yard where all characters in the shot are wearing black, this shows that these people may be related to the guy in the previous scene and are going to bury him after his death, Actors and Crew members are shown in the scene to give the audience information into the film.

Then enter these characters, the camera are specifically showing these individual characters to show these will be important throughout the film, also these people look out of place, there costume isn't fully black outfits, there more casual and relaxed to show that these are rebellious, don’t stick to rules kind of people which may hint there part of some gang or they had something to do with the passing of the dead guy.

Suddenly the shot changed to this run down, dark, horrible look apartment building, this establishes the setting of the film and shows that the story line will be based here, This shows to the audience that even without the zombies this isn't a nice place to live which makes them feel uneasy about the story and what kind of things they’re going to see when the characters enter this place.

The character from the previous scene are then shown from a boot of a car loading up on guns and ammunition, this shows that this will be an action packed film with a lot of fighting and violence and also that these characters are expecting a fight of some sort with the people there going to kill, this shot is a worms view of them which gives off the effect that these people are big and powerful and you wouldn't want to mess with them because of it,  Also due to the armory and heavy guns the audience may think these people are cops that are doing a job to find whoever killed the man in the previous scene which makes the audience go on their side and start empathizing with them. The mise on scene shows this.

However in the following shot that assumption is quickly removed because they are now wearing face masks to hide their identities which stereotypes criminals which shows to the audience that these people aren't meant to be in that place, which now changed the opinion that they may be criminals going to commit crimes against the residents living in the apartments so the audience are left guessing.

A fight scene in a 2 person mid shot then occurs and it shows one of the characters not using their weapon which may show a little sympathy for the people they are attacking and how he doesn't want to kill anyone while doing the job, this makes the audience sympathize with this certain character because he seems like a man with a conscience so they can relate however his team mate comes along and stabs the guy he just attacked which automatically shows that some of the other characters do want to kill people which goes back to the audience feeling intimidated by these people and shows even though there the main characters, they still aren't nice people.

Title of the film is then shown to the audience in big bold colours surrounded by a black background, however the colours of the title has red in it, this represents blood and death so this shows that there will be horror and death involved in the story
